IFS (International Food Standard)

German retailers (united under HDE, Hauptverband der Deutschen Einzelhandels) developed a certification system that is very similar to BRC. It was also designed for suppliers of private label products to retailers and also aims at food safety and hygiene in the food-processing industry.

Fairly recently, also French retailers (united under FCD, Fédération des entreprises du commerce et de la distribution) joined this system. As a result, more and more French retailers expect their suppliers to meet IFS requirements.

The content of IFS specifications is very similar to the content of BRC
specifications. These specifications comprise 5 chapters:

  • quality system and HACCP system management.
  • management responsibility.
  • personnel guidelines.
  • production and factory environment control.
  • production process monitoring, analyses, corrective actions.
